Taormina and hinterland

Once past the Porta Catania arch you will be on the famous Corso Umberto, Taormina’s pedestrian street, lined with elegant boutiques, pubs, bars, restaurants and much more.Sip your drinks into the night while watching the world go by, or taste the succulent Sicilian pastries while enjoying one of the most famous panoramas in the world. A must is the famous Greek theatre, built by the Greeks and almost entirely rebuilt by the Romans when it was used by the gladiators; from the highest point of the ‘cavea’ breathtaking views of the eastern Sicilian coast can be enjoyed.

In Piazza Vittorio Emanuele you can visit the Palazzo Corvaja with it’s 14th century façade seat of the first Arab Parliament, just near is the often overlooked Odeon theatre, a small theatre built in Imperial times on a more ancient structure.

Of the same age are the Naumachie, a long and well-built brick contruction considered one of the most noted Roman monuments of Sicily. In the centre of town itself there are numerous architectural jewels, not forgetting the Cathedral, built in the 13th century and rebuilt in both the 15th and 17th century.

Once you have visited Taormina’s historical architecture, then Isola Bella on the beach or Castelmola with it’s breathtaking views are certainly not to be missed.Further afield, Mt. Etna can not be overlooked for this once in a life-time experience and the city of Catania, another pearl not to be missed, rich in history and traditions is well worth a visit.
